This article examines fraternal emotion embodied in the phenomenon of the fraternal kiss. The fraternal kiss has received little attention despite its frequent appearance in newspapers and images from 1790-1799. It is the contention of this article that the fraternal kiss was a central part of the emotional regime of the Revolution, and that it was vital to the expression of political unity. The emotional community articulated by the fraternal kiss made it an essential mode for expressing revolutionary commitment. Through an analysis of newspaper reports, memoirs, political reports, as well as several images including Jacques-Louis David’s Leonidas and his Tennis Court Oath, this article seeks to underscore the powerful yet volatile nature of the fraternal kiss and highlight its significance as a passionate expression of the revolutionary commitment to fraternity.
