This article aims to distinguish, on the basis of images, the press and some police reports, the groups defined under the Thermidorian Convention and the Directory, by their ways of dressing and political positions: Muscadins, Incroyables, Merveilleuses, the "collars" of Year V. The politicization of clothing, already prevalent during the early years of the Revolution, far from running out of steam, reached its height under the Directory. Opponents of the Jacobins and then of the Directory multiplied the political symbols in the construction of their appearance by making use, not of cockades, but of everyday items of clothing (hairstyles, collars, etc.). The police ended by becoming concerned about the new fashions. The bold outfits of the Merveilleuses drew attention to a freedom of the body and customs that was all the more easily denounced because of its connotations of corruption and immorality, supposedly the flaws of the Directory.
