In Ma vie et moi, Judith Schlanger explores the decisive relationship that every individual has with their own life. Decisive, because if we no longer believe in the existence of a higher authority that judges our works and our actions, that does not mean that we have abandoned the idea of judgment entirely. It just means that we have shifted our idea of both its authority and its purpose. In a world without transcendence, we ourselves are now in charge of assessing the success of our own existence, and, in contrast with the days of old, this judgement no longer aims to determine whether our life has been honourable and directed towards good (although these aspects can certainly still be considered), but whether it has suited us and met our needs.
