Contours and countercurrents : belgian popular sovereignty through the prism of the implementation of law in the departements reunis (1794-1799)
Abstract

The Belgian territories occupied from 1794 onwards offer an ideal case study for the implementation of revolutionary principles, notably the notion of popular sovereignty. This study examines certain problems encountered in applying the law in these lands, aiming to understand better how the principles of sovereignty and representation were adapted to local political traditions. This research sheds light on the nuances of political integration and representation in the annexed departments, and it highlights the resilience of Belgian popular sovereignty in a context of domination and constant transformation.
