The ban on Marion de Lorme is the first time the close relations between literature, politics, publishing and journalism, which characterise Victor Hugo and distinguish him from his contemporaries, emerges. The strategy he put in place, that of rallying the press against censorship, can be reconstituted by sticking closely to the chronology and to press articles : the fate of the fourth act of the unpublished play of a poet who is not yet thirty takes up almost as much room as the last change of government. This strategy, which revealed to Hugo the power of a well-managed communications plan, also enabled censorship to be for the most part muzzled for Hernani. He will not forget it when publishing Victor Hugo, by a witness of his life (Victor Hugo raconté par un témoin de sa vie) and will defend until the end his version of the facts. The episode is indeed a founding one, the first of the eminently spectacular reversals that constitute his first steps on the road to exile.
