Many of Barbey’s stories start with a monument, a ruined monument ; these stories, which often start before the Revolution, literally ruin the Restoration, whose efforts at bringing back the Ancien Regime skip the necessity for repentance at the faults of the aristocracy which brought about its own ruin.
