This article explores the idea of “two bodies” as applied to the French National Assembly of 1789 inspired by the concept previously developed by Ernst Kantorowicz in his book Les Deux Corps du roi : a physical body and a symbolic body. The author analyzes how the National Assembly, after the transformation from the Estates- General, became the site of a new form of political representation, in which the physical bodies of the deputies collectively and symbolically embodied the Nation. This transition marks a break with the monarchical model by substituting a collectivity for the person of the king, and introduces the issues of continuity, legitimacy, and representation within the framework of a new political constitution.
