Modern Fausts echo bizarrely and loudly with a kind of carnival Middle Ages, begging the question of what can really be deemed clearly medieval in the fragmentary 20th century Fausts exemplified through Pessoa, Valéry, Bulgakoc, and Mann ; this requires keeping in mind that such antecedents derive, ultimately, from Goethe’s Middle Ages, and analysing their derivation.
