In this paper, the author studies the types of manner readings that can be activated by comparative comme ’ as’ with a focused number of verbs in French. The study rests on two hypotheses : VP comparatives are manner adverbials ; manner adverbials fill a semantic argument of the predicate Geuder 2000, 2006. The syntactic and semantic analysis of the commonalities and differences between the comparative s and standard averbs with suffix -ment ’-ly’ yields a clearer characterisation of the comparatives under study. The phrase within the comparative in relation with respect to the dominantpredicate is found to play a central role.
